Warriors extend unbeaten streak against ranked Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK — The Stanislaus State women's soccer team's unbeaten streak against a ranked Sonoma State team continued as the Warriors stopped the Seawolves from winning again with a scoreless tie Friday afternoon.

Playing against a ranked Sonoma State team for the fifth consecutive time in this series, the Warriors improved to 3-0-2 against the Seawolves while earning a point in the CCAA standings. Stanislaus State is now 9-3-3 overall and 4-2-3 in conference play and is currently just one point behind three teams that are tied for third place.

CCAA leader Sonoma State, ranked No. 8 in this week's NSCAA poll, had won eight straight matches entering Friday. The Seawolves are now 10-1-3, 7-0-2 CCAA.

"I was very pleased with our effort today.  We played with a a lot of heart and battled for 110 minutes," head coach Gabriel Bolton said.

Chelsea Lewandowski led the Stanislaus defense with eight saves Friday, which is a season-high. Sonoma State out-shot the Warriors 18-11, but it was the Warriors with the best scoring chances, especially in the first half. The Warriors have now registered seven shutouts this season.

Stan State had three shots in the first half from point-blank range inside the six-yard box but missed two chances. The other attempt was picked up by SSU goalie Ashley Luis, who earned her 11th shutout this season.

"Tactically I thought we were very organized and did a great job breaking their high pressure. Our counter attack was very effective and in the first half were unlucky not to finish two or three goals," Bolton added.

Prior to Friday's match, t
he Warriors have had success against a ranked Sonoma State team as they have beaten the Seawolves three times (3-0-1) since 2012 while they were nationally ranked. Stanislaus defeated No. 2 Sonoma State, 4-1, in Rohnert Park in 2012; tied #15 Sonoma State and beat No. 20 SSU, 1-0, in 2013; and took-down the No. 14 Seawolves in overtime, 4-3, in Turlock last season.

Stanislaus will travel further north to take on Humboldt State on Sunday. The Warriors have a 10-match wining streak against HSU dating back to 2009.
