Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Stanislaus snags tournament berth, picks up record 13th win

ARCATA — The Stanislaus State men's soccer team is returning to the CCAA Men's Soccer Championship tournament. And another team record was set.

With an impressive 4-0 win at Humboldt State on Sunday, the Warriors have clinched a berth in the upcoming postseason tournament as Stanislaus improved to 7-2-1 in conference play (22 points) and 13-2-1 overall. The Warriors switched places with Cal Poly Pomona for second place as the Broncos lost at San Francisco State on Sunday.

Stanislaus State, which has two home matches remaining next weekend, will have an opportunity to secure a first round bye with a win on Thursday against Cal State L.A. at Warrior Stadium.

The Warriors played in the conference tournament championship match last season and will appear in the event for the fourth time since 2011 under head coach Dana Taylor. The only time Stan State missed the CCAA tournament was 2013.

With their 13th win this season, the Warriors set a new team record in wins in a season, surpassing the previous best of 12 set in 2012. The 2012 team appeared in the NCAA Championship tournament and won its first round match.

On Sunday against Humboldt State (1-11-2, 0-8-2 CCAA), the Warriors jumped on top in the sixth minute on a Ramiro Ceja unassisted score. That score held up until the second half when Stanislaus scored three times within nine minutes.

At 61:30, Josh Jacobs opened up the scoring with his second goal of the weekend. Similar to his goal on Friday at Sonoma State, the defender finished off a corner kick from Rafael Chavez to make it 2-0. At 63:46, Ryan Chaney scored his sixth goal of his freshman year — this time a header from a Gerardo Cazares cross. Cazares continues to lead the CCAA in assists, now with eight. Finally, in the 71st minute, Manny Villegas stole the ball from a HSU defender and went 1-v-1 with HSU goalie Christopher Cherms and deposited his sixth goal of the season for the final count.

The Warriors were whistled for 18 fouls against HSU's eight but out-shot the Lumberjacks, 19-11 (9-5 on frame). Russ Klabough, who had five saves, recorded his sixth shoutout. It was Stan State's ninth shutout of the season. Klabough and Alex Valdovinos shared the other three shutouts.
