Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Warriors beaten by L.A., but not out of tournament picture

TURLOCK — The Warriors are down, but not out.

Despite losing to Cal State L.A., 1-0, Thursday night — and seeing its lineup trimmed by another starter due to injury — the Stanislaus State women's soccer team are still in the hunt for a CCAA tournament berth.

With Humboldt State's loss Thursday at Cal Poly Pomona, the Warriors can still pick up the sixth spot in the conference tournament with a win on Saturday, coupled with another HSU loss.

Stan State, now 9-5-3, 4-4-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, are in seventh place with 15 points. Humboldt State, in sixth with 17 points at 5-4-2, is at Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday at 2 p.m. So, by the time the Warriors take on the field on Senior Night, they will know what's at stake.

"I'm proud of our effort tonight. The result didn't go our way but we gave a great effort for 90 minutes," head coach Gabriel Bolton said.

Thursday night, the Warriors certainly had their chances to capitalize before extending their scoring draught. On a 2-v-1 chance, Kirsten Coleman's hard shot was right at L.A. goalkeeper Adriana Maldonado. Late in the second half, the best scoring chance of the night belonged to Mikayla Clifford, whose 22-yard blast sailed over Maldonado but hit the cross bar. Coleman was there for a rebound try but the Golden Eagles recovered to prevent a shot.

"
We created lots of chances just couldn't finish them.  The game is cruel that way sometimes," said Bolton.

The Warriors still out-shot Cal State L.A., 14-7, for the match. Maldonado had three saves for the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. improved to 7-6-3, 7-3-1 CCAA and into a three-way tie for second place in the standings. Tatiana Zuvic scored the goal for LA in the 63rd minute after Stan State goalkeeper Chelsea Lewandowski punched away a cross from Veronika Steen.

The match was dedicated to freshman midfielder Ashlynn Jones' mother, Teri, who passed away on Sunday from breast cancer. "Ashlynn was incredible. The fact that she even played given what she has gone through the last week speaks volumes about her courage as a person."

Since beating UC Santa Cruz, 6-0, on Oct. 17, Stanislaus has gone scoreless in the last three matches and 290 minutes.

Saturday's home finale against Cal State Dominguez Hills is at 4:30 p.m. The Toros (4-12-1, 2-8-1 CCAA) beat Cal State East Bay, 1-0, Thursday in Hayward.
