FAIRBANKS, Alaska — It might have been freezing cold outside of the Alaska Airlines Court, but the Warriors were on fire inside the building as teams open the 2015-16 season Friday night.
Taylor Faucett led the team with 22 points as Stanislaus State won in overtime, 102-97, over the University of Alaska.
Stan State was making its first trip to Fairbanks, Alaska since 1999 and just the first time in Alaska since playing in Anchorage in 2008. The Warriors will face Alaska Anchorage, ranked No. 7 in the WBCA preseason poll, Saturday at 5 p.m. local time.
Faucett, who was on the 2013-14 team and sat out last season, had a nice return hitting 9 of 14 shots to lead the Warriors in scoring.
Cassidy Sanders-Curry,
Camille Roberts and
Ana Burch led the bench scoring with combined 39 points. Sanders-Curry had 15, Roberts scored 14 and Burch 10.
Alysa Valentine nailed three three-pointers to finish with 14 points.
As a team the Warriors shot 58.7 percent on the night, including 6 of 8 attempts in overtime to outscore the Nanooks, 19-14.
Although the Warriors were slightly out-rebounded 47-44, Alaska had 22 offensive rebounds for many second and third chances. In the end, the Nanooks took 23 more shot attempts than Stanislaus but shot just 38.4 percent on the night.
Riley Holladay and Sanders-Curry each pulled eight rebounds to lead Stanislaus.
The Warriors scored 100 points for the first time since Nov. 20, 2010 in a win over Cal Maritime. It's the first time the team scored 100 points against a Division II team since the 2003 finale in a NCAA tournament game on March 14, 2003 against Cal State Bakersfield.
Friday's regular season opener marks the first official game under the new four 10-minute-period format.
