Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Art U's huge second half led to Stan State road loss

BELMONT — Ball handling and passing turned out to be a problem for the Stanislaus State women's basketball team as Academy of Art converted miscues into points to get past the Warriors in the second half for a 76-66 decision at Notre Dame de Namur Friday afternoon.

Art U scored 29 points off 25 Stanislaus turnovers, which proved to be one of the major differences in the neutral site contest at the Walter Gleason Gym in Belmont. Academy of Art improved to 3-3 while the Warriors fall to 1-2.

Alysa Valentine and Cassidy Sanders-Curry had solid games on Friday, each finishing with 14 points a piece to lead Stan State. Valentine also dished seven assists and made three of the team's seven three-pointers. Stan State, however, was just 7 for 25 from the arch for 28 percent on the night. Reana Hardin had nine points to pace the team. Sanders-Curry, who also pulled seven rebounds, was 9 of 10 from the foul line.

After being held to just eight points in the second quarter, the Urban Knights scored 23 in the third and 24 in the fourth to run past the Warriors. Most of the scoring came from inside as Art U scored a total of 42 points (24 in the second half) in the paint, leading to a 58.3 percent shooting second-half.

Jasmin Guinn led Art U with 27 points (10 for 16), four rebounds, two assists and six steals. Regina Camera scored 15 points with nine rebounds.

Stanislaus rallied from down 13 points in the first quarter all the way back by the end of the first half. A pair of Hardin free throws gave the Warriors a 30-29 lead at intermission. But Academy of Art took control by running out with a 7-0 rally to begin the second half. The Urban Knights' biggest lead was at 14 points after a Zoie Sheng three-pointer at 8:24 in the fourth period.

The Warriors will play Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday at 3 p.m. before the Thanksgiving break. They will host a pair of home contests right after Thanksgiving, on Sunday, Nov. 29 (Holy Names, 2 p.m.) and Monday Nov. 30 (Fresno Pacific, 6 p.m.).
