Warrior men fall short in shootout at Fresno Pacific

FRESNO — Christian Bayne and Alek Carlson both had career nights but the Stanislaus State men's basketball team lost a shootout at Fresno Pacific, 92-84, Saturday night.

Bayne scored a career high 26 points and Carlson surpassed his best scoring night posted in the last outing with 20 more points to lead the Warriors before they fell to 1-2 on the season. Carlson has now scored career-highs in back-to-back games after earning 16 last Saturday against Dominican.

Bayne's totals included a perfect 11-for-11 from the foul line. He was 7of 11 from the field with a three-pointer. Bayne also snagged six rebounds, dished five assists and had three steals.

Carlson made his night by splashing six three-pointers with amazing accuracy. He was 6-for-10 from the arch plus a two-pointer to go 7-for-11 on the night. He also had three assists and three rebounds. The six three-pointers made was the most by a Warrior since Brett Sayad nailed six on Jan. 21, 2011 against Cal State Monterey Bay. The last time a Warrior made more than that was Feb. 24, 2006 (Dominique Pennix, 7).

It took Fresno Pacific's Gabe Solarin's personal best 23 points and 43 Sunbird bench points to beat Stan State as FPU increased its record to 3-1.

Each team made 12 three-pointers on the night and collectively shot nearly 50 percent from long range at 24 for 50 combined.

Stan State had a 13-point first-half lead at 20-7 on a Richard Medina three-pointer but that was erased by a 7-0 run by Fresno Pacific. The Sunbirds eventually rallied back and took over the lead near the end of the first half on a Roger Paul trey with 44 seconds left to make it 41-38.

A 12-4 Fresno run that started the second half gave the Sunbirds a 13-point lead they did not give up. FPU would lead by as many as 18 points on four occassions. They shot 55.6 percent in the second half to out-gun the Warriors, 51-46, to pull ahead.

Kyi Thomas chipped in 10 points and Tim Thymes had nine points and two blocked shots to help Stanislaus. Vondel Faniel grabbed seven rebounds as Stan State out-rebounded Fresno Pacific, 34-28.
