TURLOCK — In a rare feat of holding an opponent to 40 points or less in a game, the Stanislaus State women's basketball team won its third straight with a 65-40 convincing win over Fresno Pacific Monday night at Fitzpatrick Arena.
Reana Hardin led the team in scoring in back-to-back games, this time with 13 points, as the Warriors improved to 4-2 on the season after three consecutive wins over Pacific West Conference teams within a stretch of nine days. Stanislaus will take the momentum into Thursday's California Collegiate Athletic Association opener, when the Warriors host Cal State San Bernardino at 5:30 p.m.
Ana Burch added 11 points, including three three-pointers, in 14 minutes of play to contribute. She also had three of the team's 11 steals. Two Warriors each scored six (
Cassidy Sanders-Curry and
Leticia Infante) with two more (
Jasmine Washington and
Alysa Valentine) adding five apiece in another team-balanced scoring game. In all, 12 of the 16 players scored while the bench out-scoring FPU's 38-17.
For a while, at least early in the game, it looked as if the Central Valley match-up would be a high-scoring game. The Warriors ran out to a 7-2 lead but Fresno Pacific (1-4) tied it at 10-10 five minutes into the first quarter. Then things slow way down on offense due to defense and turnovers. The Warriors managed to shoot 6 of 10 to take a 15-14 lead at the first intermmission despite seven turnovers.
Fortunately for the home team, Fresno Pacific scored just nine points in the second period on 4 for 17 shooting while Stan State rolled out 22 second-quarter points for a 37-23 halftime lead.
Stan State built its lead up to 21 points with 3:46 to play in the third on a pair of free throws by
Taylor Faucett and the Sunbirds could not stage any sort of comeback against the Warriors' interior defense with taller players stifling any inside scoring and second chances by FPU.
Fresno Pacific scored just two points for nearly the entire fourth quarter — a Daeja Gilmer layup at 5:37 — until a late three-pointer by Kaysha Fox at 1:49 left to play.
In the end, the Warriors held Fresno Pacific to just 25.8 percent shooting for the game and 3 for 19 from the arch (15.8 percent). Stanislaus also held a slight rebounding advantage, 38-30. The Warriors have out-rebounded teams for the fourth consecutive game. Hardin and
Erika Larsen each pulled six rebounds Monday night.
The Warriors held an opponent to 40 points or less for the third time since 2009. Last Feb. 21, the Warriors won at Sonoma State, 53-36 and on Feb. 14, 2009, Stanislaus won at Sonoma State, 35-31.
