TURLOCK — In a tale of two different halves, the Stanislalus State women's basketball team won the battle of the second half for a 58-57 comeback victory over Cal State San Bernardino in its first conference game Thursday night.
The Warriors rallied back from a 17-point deficit with strong second half defense and much-improved shooting to extend their winning streak to four games. Stan State is now 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Jasmine Washington and
Cassidy Sanders-Curry again led the balanced offensive output each with 10 points.
Reana Hardin scored nine on three three-pointers and
Taylor Faucett chipped in eight points to pace Stanislaus.
Stanislaus State will be looking to extend the winning streak to five on Saturday at San Francisco State.
The first half was all Cal State San Bernardino (3-3, 0-2 CCAA) as the Coyotes shot 50 percent while holding the Warriors to just 19 points in the first two quarters for a 34-19 halftime score. CSUSB led by as many as 17 points at 3:34 in the second period after a 6-0 run capped by a Leelee Owens layup. San Bernardino had a 11-0 run during a 3-plus minute stretch spanning the first and second quarters that had them leading 23-8.
However, like it has been a few times already this season, the Warriors played their best in the third quarter. Thursday night it was the same as they jumped out to a 13-4 run after the break to cut the deficit down to six points. The Coyotes would build the lead back up to nine, 50-41, at 9:20 in the fourth, but the rest of the quarter was on the Stanislaus side.
With stepped-up defensive play, the Warriors held CSUSB to just 32 percent shooting in the second half while on offense shot 51.5 percent for the comeback.
A 12-0 run with five different Warriors scoring turned a 7-point CSUSB lead into a three-point Stanislaus advantage at 3:24 left to play. Facuett's layup capped the rally that included five baskets in the paint.
The Stan State roster-depth again made a difference, as the non-starters out-scored CSUSB's bench 33-11.
Three Coyotes were in double figures in scoring with Chelsea Barnes leading the way with 15 points. Adriana Brodie posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds and Alexcia Mack added 12 points.
