TURLOCK — In a preseason tune-up exhibition, the new-look Stanislaus State men's basketball team took down visiting Bristol University, 77-53, Thursday night at Fitzpatrick Arena.
Christian Bayne led all players with 15 points while
Joey Bennett and
Vondel Faniel each scored 13 points off the bench to lead the Stan State, which benefited from playing against a tired team. Bristol played at Arcata Wednesday night in a shootout before dropping a 93-76 game to Humboldt State.
The 2015-16 Warriors look drastically different from the team from the last two seasons when they made a run to the regional title game in 2014 and a second consecutive CCAA tournament appearance in 2015. Stanislaus featured just one senior —
Alek Carlson — and one other returning player with significant playing time as a freshman last season in Bayne.
Bayne had a quick start Thursday night, hitting on 4 of 5 shots in the first half for 10 points. He also made both shot attempts in the second half en route to the 15-point game. He also had four assists sand three steals.
Bennett, fresh off a redshirt season, scored 13 and pulled seven boards in 18 minutes of play off the bench and Faniel led the Warriors with eight rebounds to go with his 13 points, too.
Kyi Thomas also had eight rebounds and Carlson finished with eight points, including two of the team's seven three-pointers.
Richard Medina also played well and chipped in seven points with four rebounds.
Jaylen Rose led Briston with 10 points but the Bears shot just 28.1 percent from the field for the night.
Stan State also out-rebounded Bristol, 46-24.
The Warriors will open the regular season on the road in a couple of weeks, on Nov. 19, at Notre Dame de Namur, before the actual home opener two days later against Dominican.
