STAN STATE WINS! Warriors advance on PKs, to play for banner

POMONA — Russ Klabough has been the best goalkeeper in the California Collegiate Athletic Association in 2015. The league's head coaches knew it and they voted him to the All-CCAA first team. Klabough displayed his mad skills Friday night as the Warriors advance to the finals on penalty kicks.

The Warriors made three penalty kick shots and Klabough saved three Cal State Dominguez Hills tries as Stan State advanced with a 3-1 advantage in PKs after a 1-1 score after two overtimes.

Stanislaus State (15-3-2) will play for the CCAA tournament championship on Sunday at 3 p.m. against No. 2 seed, and host, Cal Poly Pomona. Cal Poly Pomona defeated Cal State L.A., 3-2, with 24 seconds left to play in the second overtime late Friday.

The CCAA title match will feature a rematch of the 2014 event. Last year in Turlock, the Warriors and Cal Poly Pomona played to a 1-1 draw with the Broncos claiming the conference championship with a 3-0 advantage in penalty kicks. The Warriors won the conference championship in 2012.

Friday night, in the first men's semifinal contest, the teams battled to a 1-1 tie — and for the latter part of the match each side with one man down — after two overtime periods to force the shootout to declare the advancing team.

The Toros made their first try on a shot by Gilberto Rocha but the next three attempts were all punched-out saved by a diving Klabough to shut-down CSUDH, the tournament's top seed as the regular season leader.

On the Stanislaus side, after a Gerardo Cazares shot was saved by Chase Gentry, Luis Hernandez, Matthew Waldron and Rafael Chavez all made their tries with Chavez faked out Gentry for the score to advance.

Klabough had already made his star status known in regulation as he and the Warrior defense kept the high scoring Toros team down. CSUDH ended up with 19 shots in the match with six on-goal. Klabough was credited with five saves on the stat sheet.

Similar to the teams' meeting in the regular season finale last Saturday in Turlock, the physical contest resulted in five cautions and two ejections. Dominguez Hills was a man-down starting in the 77th minute and Stan State received a red card with five minutes left to play in the second extra period. In the end, 36 fouls were called with the Warriors charged with 23.

The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute on a gift from the Toros. From a throw-in from the near sideline, a CSUDH defender tried keep the ball from going into the box but instead headed the ball into the net for an own goal. Cal State Dominguez Hills (14-2-3) then tied the match in the 63rd minute on a goal by Pedro Velasquez.

Stanislaus State has now gone 1-0-1 against the top-ranked team in the West Region this week after the Warriors handed the Toros their only CCAA loss of the year in the final match of the regular season. While the Warriors advance in postseason on PKs Friday night, officially the match is a draw in the records.
