TURLOCK — The Warriors were ultra-competitive Friday night playing against one of the best teams in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. However, the UC San Diego Tritons proved too strong as they rallied and held-off a determined Stanislaus team for a three-set decision.
Meagan Wright, the Tritons' attack leader, led all players with 11 kills as UC San Diego swept the match, 25-17, 25-23, 25-20. But the match much closer than UCSD's straight-set win.
The Warriors held leads late in both the second and third sets before UCSD ultimately pushed ahead to improve to 16-9 overall and 12-5 in CCAA play in third place. Stanislaus had its four-match home winning streak snapped and dropped to 13-9 overall and 7-9 in conference play.
Jocelyn Cervantes had nine kills and 10 digs plus three block-assists to lead the Warriors side.
Clairissa Larry and
Blair Ehrlich spiked eight and seven kills, respectively. Libero
Sarah Crowl had 17 digs and
Morgan Miller led with five block assists. Ehrlich also had 12 digs. Stan State was without one of its leaders in
Taylor Massengale, who was out with a foot injury.
UC San Diego had 18 total blocks with Alyssa McNelly stuffing two by herself with four assisted blocks. Danielle Dahle had 15 digs to go with 10 kills as well.
Stan State led 21-18 in the second set but three straight UCSD points tied the match before the Tritons rolled to a two-point win on three straight kills by Dahle. In set number three, the Warriors led as late as 20-19, but six consecutive Triton points that was started by Wright and Dahle gave the visitors the win. The match ended on four Warrior attacking errors.
The Tritons, the CCAA's best serving team earned four more service aces on the night to run their total to 137. They also hit .252 on the attck.
The Warriors will have to regroup for Saturday night's match, which is against 17th ranked Cal State San Bernardino. It will be senior night at Fitzpatrick Arena with the match starting at 7 p.m.
