BELMONT — The Cal State Stanislaus softball team split a pair of one-run games on Super Bowl Sunday as the Warriors opened the 2015 season on the road at Notre Dame de Namur.
Freshman catcher
Alex Rowell drove in the go-ahead run and the Warriors held on to win game one, 4-3, in the eighth. Then, Notre Dame de Namur returned the favor with a walk-off 6-5 win for the non-conference twinbill split.
In the game one win,
Cheyenne Harper reached on a fielder's choice during a bunt play and moved to second on a wild pitch. Then Rowell singled in the score to break the 3-3 tie in the top of the eighth. Senior pitcher
Natalie Rendon then shut-down the Argonauts with a 1-2-3 inning including two strikeouts to preserve the Stanislaus win.
Harper, who pitched three scoreless innings in relief of starter
Jessica Varady, received the win in the circle in her first Warrior appearance. Rowell finished the game 2-for-3, including a fourth inning double.
Morgan Balestreri was 3-for-3 with two runs batted in on a single in the fourth.
In the second game, the Warriors rallied from down 5-2 to even the score with three runs in the top of the sixth.
Gabby Dias drove in a score, Rowell doubled in a run and
Kailene Begonia singled in the tying run to make it 5-5. However, the NDNU won the game in walk-off fashion when Breanna Young singled in Kaydi Kochi, who had doubled to start the inning.
Nicolette Vizcaino went 2-for-3 for two of the Warriors' six hits in the second game. Varady was charged with the loss by giving up the final run after a perfect sixth inning when she retired all three Argonauts with two strikeouts.
Balestreri, who went 1-for-3 in game two, finished the day with four hits.
