TURLOCK —
Patrick Mulry's two-run double tied the game and
Christian Kahler became the hero for the second time in as many games as the Cal State Stanislaus baseball team rallied from behind to win, 4-3, over Holy Names in dramatic fashion Friday night.
In the programs' first ever meeting, the game was decided in the eighth inning. In the end it was the Warriors taking game one of the four-game series to improve to 4-3 overall. Holy Names, in its third season playing baseball at the Universitiy located in Oakland, show great pitching and defense before falling to 5-3.
But more than two hours prior to the dramatic eighth inning, locally grown talent
Tyler Murphy made his highly anticipated home debut on the mound in front of family and friends. The Friday night start made his comeback story complete after sitting out from baseball — and redshirting at Saint Mary's College — due a horrific boating accident that nearly ended his career.
While not dominating, the Turlock-High product definitely show why he got the call to start game one of the series Friday night. In six innings of work, he gave up just one run on three hits and struck out five. At one stretch in the game, he retired 9 of 11 batters, with the help of a double-play and
Marcus Mastrobuoni gunning down a would-be base-stealer. Murphy, however, did walk five batters to get himself into some jams but he did leave the game with a 1-1 tie.
After Holy Names scored two runs on a two-run double off the bat of Sean Carrington in the eighth, the Warriors rallied in the home half of the inning.
Stanislaus worked the bases loaded on a single, two walks and a bunt, to set-up Mulry's at-bat. Oddly, with a left-handed pitcher ready to enter the game from the bullpen, Holy Names coaches elected to leave righty Connor McCoy in the game to face Mulry. On a 0-2 count, the left-handed Mulry slapped a shot down to the right-corner to score two runs to tie the score.
Then, Kahler followed with a pinch-hit single to score runner
Gino Franceschetti for the go-ahead run.
Kahler was also the hitting hero in the Warriors' previous game, last Saturday at Fresno Pacific in the eighth inning of a seven-inning game. Kahler's pinch-hit single scored
James Heller to allow the Warriors to win 6-5 to avoid the series sweep.
Aaron Godinez picked up the win in relief after a clean sheet in 1 2/3 innings. He entered the game with just one out in the eighth after Carrington's double that gave the Hawks a 3-1 lead. Aside from a hit-batsman, Godinez retired the other five batters in faced with ease, including ending the game on a strikeout.
Holy Names starter Jayse Bannister threw 6 1/3 innings and gave up a run on six hits with six strikeouts for a quality start. Carrington went 2-for-2 and drove in all three runs coming off the bench.
