SAN BERNARDINO — A three-pointer by Chelsea Austin with 18 seconds left to play was the final bucket in a close game as Cal State San Bernardino escaped with a narrow win over Cal State Stanislaus, 62-60, Saturday night.
The Warriors gave the Coyotes, which is in contention as one of the top teams in the conference, all they could handle on the night before losing their fourth staight to fall to 6-16 and 4-14 in CCAA. Cal State San Bernardino is now 17-5 and 13-5, fourth in the CCAA.
Five Warriors scored nine points or more with
Erika Larsen leading with 10 points on five of six shooting.
Alysa Valentine had nine points, five assists and two steals on valentine's day, and
Jasmine Washington also scored nine points with seven rebounds.
Cassidy Sanders-Curry and
Briana Cotton each also scored nine points.
Stanislaus stayed in the game by shooting 46.2 percent, but Cal State San Bernardino cashed in on the foul line, hitting 21 of 26 free throws.
Neither team led by more than five points in a close game and no one had much of a momentum. The Warriors had a 9-0 run in the middle of the first half to give them a five-run, 23-18, lead. A 7-0 CSUSB run swung back the momentum towards the Coyotes but a 7-0 Warrior run just before the end of the half gave CSUS a four-point lead.
The second half was closer with the Warriors leading by five twice. A Cotton three-pointer with 1:35 left to play gave Stanislaus a 60-58 lead, but that was the last point the Warriors would get.
