TURLOCK — The Hawaii Hilo Vulcans couldn't get
Nicolette Vizcaino out during the twilight doubleheader. After getting on base with her speed, the sophomore outfielder used her bat to drive home two run to end the night as Cal State Stanislaus won twice in walk-off fashion Tuesday evening.
Starting pitchers
Jessica Varady and
Natalie Rendon both pitched out of many jams to record victories as the Warriors won 3-2 and 8-0, the latter in five innings, to even their record to 5-5 overall.
Holly Mooring was the hero in game one with a RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to score Vizcaino — who had led off the inning with a bunt single, stole second and went to third on a fly out to right.
In her first six at bats on the day, Vizcaino didn't have to hit the ball out of the infield for five singles with her blazing speed. Then, with her team up 6-0 with the bases loaded in the fifth inning of the nightcap, the Turlock High product lined a shot to centerfield to score two runs to end the game by mercy rule.
Oh, and Vizcaino was also 4-for-4 in stolen bases in the twinbill. She's now 12-for-12 on the season.
Mooring finished the night with four hits with two runs batted in. Aside from the game-one winner, she also drove in Vizcaino in the third inning of the second game with an one-out single to make it 2-0.
Varady, who also had two hits to help her own cause, out-dueled the Vulcans (6-6) ace Vanessa Salinas. Varady gave up two runs on six hits, including a solo homerun to Emily Greene in the third. She also struck out six but walked seven to create rallies for Hawaii Hilo. However, Varady was able to get out of many jams and left 10 Vulcans on bases.
In game two, Rendon allowed just three singles, struck out five and walked five in the five-inning complete game. In her last four appearances (three in relief), she has only allowed one run in 15 innings with 16 strikeouts for a 2-0 record and a 0.47 ERA.
Morgan Balestreri also had a three-hit day, including a 2-for-3, two-run scored game two.
Hawaii Hilo, which will conclude its 14-game, 9-day trip on Wednesday with a pair at San Francisco State, was led by Colleen Aubrey, who went 3-for-3 in game one. Salinas picked up the loss in game one (6 1/3 innings, 10 hits, six strikeouts) and Danielle Wilson suffered the loss in the nightcap (4 2/3 innings, 9 hits, 5 earned runs).
