Warriors end hot UC San Diego streak, earn split

TURLOCK — Putting the pressure on early and capitalizing on Tritons errors, the Cal State Stanislaus softball team snapped UC San Diego's 11-game winning streak in a 6-1 game one win on Friday. UC San Diego got even in game two in a 5-0 win for the split.

Cal State Stanislaus, now 6-6 overall and 2-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, scored six times in the first inning on just two hits for the game one win.

UC San Diego (12-2, 5-1 CCAA), which had won 14 straight in the head-to-head series until Friday, and the Warriors will square off again on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.

The first inning of the opener featured just two Warriors singles, but UC San Diego made mistakes. A total of three errors, including a catcher's inference, three walks and two wild pitches eventually resulted in six Stanislaus runs — only two runs were earned by Tritons pitcher Hannah Duarte.

The first throwing error came perhaps due to the Warriors' speed on the basepaths. With runners at the corners on a delay first-and-third steals play, UCSD catcher threw the ball into centerfield to score Nicolette Vizcaino. Vizcaino had set the table with a leadoff walk and stole second easily to run her season total to 13 for 13.

Jessica Varady used the early lead and cruised. The senior pitcher allowed two leadoff walks in second inning — but got out of the jam by striking out the side. UC San Diego collected a single in each of the third through sixth ining, but all were left on base.

In the end, Varady allowed just one unearned run on five hits in the complete game shutout. She struckout six and walked three to improve to 3-3 on the season.

Cassidy Duke went 2-for-4 in game one and had a hit in game two for a three-hit day. Holly Mooring had the other hit — a RBI in the first — for Stanislaus in game one.

The Warriors also only had three hits in game two in the 5-0 shutout. UCSD starter Alexis Edwards recorded the complete game with five strikouts and one walk for the win.
