Chico State's Barker shuts down Warriors in CCAA opener

TURLOCK — Chico State ace Luke Barker labored for just one inning in the CCAA opener for both teams Friday night as the Warriors lost 5-1 to the 21st ranked Wildcats.

Barker went the distance and gave up just one run on three hits while fanning 11 Warriors en route to his first win of the season. Chico State, which had just played three games entering Friday, improved to 2-2 and 1-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

For Cal State Stanislaus, which will send Nick Voumard in Saturday's game one to face Brad Lohse, falls to 5-6 and 0-1 in CCAA. Saturday's doubleheader, games two and three of the series, will start at Noon. Dustin Baisdon is scheduled to start the nightcap for the Warriors.

Barker retired the first 11 batters before Marcus Mastrobuoni doubled down the left field line for the Warriors' first baserunner in the fourth. Mastrobuoni then moved to third on a wild pitch but was stranded there even after a James Heller walk. Barker got Klayton Miller to strikeout to end the Stanislaus threat.

The sixth inning was really when Barker had to work. After giving up a single to Dante Broome, Barker got Skippy Ferreria to pop up. Then, Michael Chavarria singled to make it first and third with just one out. Mastrobuoni struck out on a borderline call on the outside edge of the plate for the second out.

Then the Warriors stole a run with Chavarria getting in a run-down between first and second, allowing Broome to score for the lone Stanislaus run.

By then, it was 2-1 Chico before the Wildcats rallied for two more runs in the seventh to make it 4-1. Peter Miller's two-out, two-run double finally ended Stanislaus starter Tyler Murphy's night. Aside from the seventh inning, Murphy had a solid start before ending up allowing four runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. The redshirt freshman struck out six but walked four.

After the Warriors' sixth inning one-run rally, Barker settled back down, retiring the next 10 Warriors in order to complete his masterpiece.

Danny Miller had two hits for Chico State and Tyler Madrid got the Wildcats on the board in the second inning with a towering blast over the manual scoreboard in right-centerfield.
