Game Recap: Baseball |

No. 21 Chico State wins two more over Cal State Stanislaus

TURLOCK — With more strong pitching from one of the best pitching staffs in the West Region, the No. 21 ranked Chico State baseball team sweep the doubleheader on a very eventful six-plus hours at Warrior Baseball Field.

Using just four hits and despite five errors, Chico State won game one 5-4 in 11 innings and went on to win the nightcap 5-3 to improved to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Warriors played well enough to at least win the first game, instead will try to avoid the sweep on Sunday in the finale scheduled for a noon start.

With three wins in this series, Chico State continues its streak over the Warriors having won 13 straight head-to-head. Stanislaus is still looking for its first win over the Wildcats since May 5, 2012. Chico State has also now won nine straight in games played here in Turlock.

Chico State was the recipient of two early errors in the first inning of game one on Saturday that resulted in two unearned runs — and that set the tone of the day.

Trailing 3-0, the Warriors scored four runs in the fifth inning, which featured four Wildcat errors with just three Stanislaus hits. Dante Broome provided the big hit to capitalize on Chico mistakes with a two-run double to mop-up the four-run inning.

That was the one inning Chico starter Brad Lohse struggled before completing seven innings and gave up six hits. All runs were unearned by the Chico staff. In fact out of the nine runs scored by both teams in the first game, only one run was earned.

The Stanislaus pitching staff was also able to keep the Wildcats bat relatively quiet. Chico State had just two hits going into the 11th inning — but it doubled that count to put together the final rally that decided the game. After singles by Connor Huesers and Sean Smith, the go-ahead run was eventually scored Huesers on a passed ball.

Before the Chico 11th, however, the Warriors had a huge chance for a walkoff win in the 10th. With runners at second and third and one out, Robert Hook got Christian Kahler to ground out sharply to short before intentionally walked Skippy Ferreria. Nick Molina had a chance to be the hero but his grounder to the hole between short and third was sucked up by Cody Slader, who then gunned the throw to first to end the inning.

Together, the teams committed nine errors in game one — and they weren't done. There were three more miscues charged in the books in the seven-inning nightcap and some mistakes were arguably made by the umpiring crew, which resulted in the ejection of a Warrior player and assistant coach in separate incidents.

Hunter Haworth went the distance in the nightcap for his first collegiate win. He gave up three runs — including a long bomb by Klayton Miller to deep center in the seventh — on seven hits and struckout five. It was Miller's third homer of the year.

James Heller went 2-for-4 in game two with a triple and a RBI double in the seventh. He was 1-for-6 in game one giving him a 3-for-10 day at the leadoff spot for the first time. Dustin Baisdon was tagged with the loss in the nightcap. He threw six innings, gave up two earned outs out of four allowed on eight hits and fanned five batters.
