ROHNERT PARK —
Briana Cotton led the Warrriors with 12 points and Cal State Stanislaus held Sonoma State to just 36 points as they won their second in-a-row, on the road, this time a 53-36 victory over Sonoma State.
After trailing 9-2 to start the game, the Warriors responded and slowly chipped away and held Sonoma State to just 26.9 percent shooting on the night to improve to 8-16 overall and 6-14 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association after winning two straight. The Warriors defeated SF State, 65-55, Friday night at The Swamp.
A couple of 8-0 Stanislaus surges made the difference on the night on the scoring front. Cotton nailed a three with 16:54 to go in the second half to cap a 8-0 run that was started with a triple by
Ana Burch at the end of the first half. That run gave the Warriors a 32-19 lead.
The second 8-0 run came in the middle of the second half, again capped by another Cotton three-pointer at 11:33 to make it a 42-26 Stanislaus lead.
Cotton's 12 points all came from beyond the arch. In fact, every shot she took Saturday night was for three as she ended up 4-for-7.
Morgan Roots made three three-pointers for her nine points and
Reana Hardin chipped in four points and four steals.
Cassidy Sanders-Curry led the team with eight rebounds and
Riley Holladay had seven boards, even though Stanislaus was out-rebounded by Sonoma, 41-35.
While 12 points on the night for Cotton isn't getting her much closer to the 1,000-point career mark, it was plenty to help the Warriors on the night. The senior guard now has 942 points with two games left in her career.
Those two games are next weekend at Fitzpatrick Arena with Cal State East Bay (Friday at 5:30 p.m.) and Cal State Monterey Bay (Saturday at 5:30 p.m.) visiting.
