TURLOCK — Against one of the better pitching teams in the West Region, the Warriors managed a couple of home runs, but it was the strong pitching arms of the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds coming out on top with a non-conference doubleheader sweep.
Fresno Pacific spoiled the Cal State Stanislaus home opener in front of a large crowd for the Warriors Baseball Field's unveiling of the upgraded grandstands and press box. FPU put up most of the runs on the new scoreboard in left-center field as the Sunbirds won both ends of the twinbill, 3-1 and 7-1, to stay undefeated at 3-0.
The Warriors — despite a long bomb by
Klayton Miller in game one and a just-cleared-the-fence homer by
Michael Chavarria in game two — dropped to 2-2 on the season. Weather permitting, Stanislaus and the Sunbirds square-off on Saturday in Fresno for two more games to complete the four-game set.
Baron Bower took the very first pitch offered by
Dustin Baisdon in game one deep to left field for a 1-0 lead. Fresno Pacific would tagged on two more in the first inning on three singles, a walk and a sacrifice fly. But that was all the runs FPU would score off Baisdon.
Baisdon settled down and allowed just four baserunners after the first inning until being lifted after two outs in the seventh. During a stretch, Baisdon retired 17 of 21 batters he faced. In the end, he had to pick up the loss as he was out-dueled by Sunbirds ace Wilson Ashford, who set a new school record with career wins.
While not dominating, Ashford gave up five hits in six innings and struck out just one for the victory. Kyle Rasmussen and Tanner Irwin finished the game for FPU by allowing three hits.
While Miller supplied the homer — a solo long shot to deep left in the second inning — it was
James Heller who went 4-for-4 in game one with two doubles but he was stranded on base all four times with three trips in scoring positiong.
In the nightcap, FPU scored three times in the third to make it a 4-0 game against a struggling Warrior starter
David Snapp. In that third inning, Warrior pitchers allowed five free passes (two walks, three hit-batsman) while Michael Hostetler provided the big-blow with a two-run double to right-center.
Hostetler would finish 4-for-5 with two RBIs and scored three times to lead the FPU 10-hit parade.
A 6-0 lead in the fourth was all FPU starter Jake Martinez would need. He gave just a run — the Chavarria line-drive homer to left that just cleared the 4-foot bullpen gate — on three hits in seven strong innings. Martinez struck out 11 batters.
Chavarria went 2-for-3 in game two to account for two of the three Stanislaus hits.
