Stanislaus-Fresno Pacific split a pair of 6-5 games

FRESNO — Christian Kahler's pinch-hit single in the top of the eighth drove in the eventual game-winner as Cal State Stanislaus split a pair of 6-5 decisions at Fresno Pacific Saturday.

After losing a 5-2 lead with Fresno Pacific scoring three runs in the sixth in a seven-inning nightcap, the Warriors rallied for the final run while Martin Gomez shut-down the Sunbirds to allow Stanislaus to avoid the series sweep. Kahler drove in three runs in game one as the starting designated hitter but it was the Sunbirds who won the first game in walkoff fashion.

Cal State Stanislaus, now 3-3 in preseason play, will move ahead to next weekend when it hosts Holy Names. The first two games of the four-game set is in Turlock with single games on Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (2 p.m.).

The Warriors scored three runs in the fourth inning of the nightcap to go up 5-2.  Cameron Irinaga drew a bases loaded walk that scored James Heller, who had doubled to start the inning. Then a throwing error by the FPU third baseman allowed two runs to come across.

Fresno Pacific scored three runs in the fifth to even the score until the final inning.

Martin Gomez earned the win by pitching two hitless innings. The Warriors had just five hits in game two in the win.

In the first game, a three-run sixth for Stanislaus had given the Warriors a 5-4 lead. Scott Stetson started the inning with a triple ahead of a Michael Chavarria grounder to start the scoring. Nick Molina and Kahler both also drove in runs in the inning.

Again, the Warriors had just five hits in the game from five different players with Kahler driving in three runs.

On the mound, Colby DeVries was charged with the loss after relieving starter Nick Voumard in the sixth.
