Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

UCSD made 30 free throws to defeat Warriors

TURLOCK — The UC San Diego Tritons got a lot of chances at the free throw line — and they cashed in on the opportunities. UCSD used the charity stripe to stay in the game and eventually pulled away for the 72-53 win over Cal State Stanislaus Saturday night.

Farrah Shokoor led all players with 14 points — 10 of those came from the foul line — plus 19 rebounds as the Tritons improved to 12-9 overall and 10-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Briana Cotton scored 15 points off the bench to get herself closer to the 900-career point plateau but the Warriors fell to 6-14 overall and 4-12 in the CCAA after dropping five of the last six games. Cotton, who hit four three-pointers Saturday night, is now just six points shy of 900 points in her four-year career at Cal State Stanislaus.

Alysa Valentine chipped in 11 points for her fifth straight double-digit scoring game. Riley Holladay led Stanislaus with seven rebounds. She also had four assists and two steals. Jasmine Washington added six rebounds, but the Warriors were out-rebounded 43-26 on the night. Washington also played good defense with a block and three steals.

The Warriors led by eight, 16-8, after a 12-0 run highlighted by three consecutive three pointers by Camille Roberts, Cotton and Holladay, but a 22-8 spurt by UCSD closed out the first half with the Tritons on top 30-21. Of those 22 points, 15 were from the free throw line.

UC San Diego was hitting just 19 percent of its shots in the first half but went to the line 20 times. The Tritions converted on 18 of 18 free throws before finishing the half 19 of 20. In the second half, UCSD went 11 for 13 to finish the game 90.9 percent, 30 for 33 from the foul line.

The Warriors stayed with UCSD in the first half despite making just 27.6 percent of shots, but the Tritons offense heated up as they made 65.2 percent of their shots to pull away.

UCSD led by as many as 17 points in the second half, but the Warriors rallied to cut that deficit to 10 after a And-one three-point play by Cassiday Sanders-Curry at 3:31 to go. The Tritons, though, finished with a 14-5 run to close out the contest.
