ARCATA — The Stanislaus pitching and defense couldn't keep the Humboldt State offense at bay as the Lumberjacks swept a pair of California Collegiate Athletic Association games in five innings on Saturday.
Jessica Varady and
Alex Rowell both homered in game one but the Lumberjacks scored at well in a 10-2 win. In the series finale, Tiffany Hollingsworth blasted two more homers to lead Humboldt State over Stanislaus, 8-0.
In the doubleheader, the Warriors were out-hit 18-5 as they dropped their eighth straight and fell to 9-19 overall and 3-17 in the CCAA. Cal State Stanislaus has also lost 11 consecutive conference games.
Varady and Rowell managed to collect both of the team's hits in the opener — both were home runs. Varady's came in the second inning to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. She also had a grand slam homer on Friday. Rowell belted a solo homer down the left field line in the fifth to make it 8-2.
Humboldt State (17-8, 13-4 CCAA) scored twice in the home half of the fifth to end the game for the mercy rule win. Dani Randall collected a grand slam in the third and also drove in two runs to highlight another HSU four-run inning in the fourth. Randall finished game one 2-for-3 with six runs batted in.
In the second game, the Warriors couldn't get much going against HSU pitcher Katie Obbema as they scattered just three singles. In the Stanislaus fourth, with one out, the Warriors put together two consecutive singles — by
Gabby Dias and Varady — but the inning ended on a fouled out and a strikeout.
Hollingsworth, who hit three homers in Friday's twinbill, added two more in the finale. She hit a two-run bomb in the first and added a solo shot in the fourth inning.
Varady on a solid weekend at the plate, going 6-for-11 to bat .545 with two homers and six runs batted in (slugging percentage of 1.091). Dias batted .556 and
Nicolette Vizcaino was 4-for-10 in the series, but as a team the Warriors batted .267.
