Softball won one of three to start own tournament

TURLOCK — The Cal State Stanislaus softball team went 1-2 on the opening day of the 14th annual Tournament of Champions presented by the Turlock Convention & Visitors Bureau on Friday.

The Warriors defeated Simon Fraser, 8-1, in their second game of the day after falling to Northwest Nazarene, 6-5, to start the event held at the Pedretti and Turlock Sports Complexes. Stanislaus then lost the late-nightcap, 9-1, in six innings to Montana State Billings.

Deenah San Luis and Holly Mooring each had four hits to lead the Stanislaus offense and are now 10-21 overall this season. The win snapped a nine-game losing streak.

Mooring went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer in the first inning of the Warriors' first day. She also had a double against Northwest Nazarene. However, NNU scored twice in the sixth to over-take the game and held on to win.

Against Simon Fraser, three Warriors — San Luis, Mooring and Morgan Balestreri — each had two hits and Cassidy Duke doubled in two runs in the second inning to supply the offense. The Warriors scored three runs in the second and sixth innings and tagged on two more in the fourth.

In the nightcap, in the game that didn't start until 9:30 p.m., against Montana State Billings the Yellowjackets scored six runs in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie and scored twice in the sixth for the mercy rule decision.

Jessica Varady got the win the game two over Simon Fraser. Varady threw 12 1/3 innings and gave up just one earned run. She struckout 17 batters but walked 10. Varady ended up 1-1 on the day with a 0.57 ERA.

The 24-team tournament continues on Saturday and concludes on Sunday in Turlock. The Warriors will face Holy Names and Central Washington.
