Baseball makes it three straight with twinbill sweep

TURLOCK — For the first time in a year the Warriors extend their winning streak to three as Cal State Stanislaus sweep a doubleheader over San Francisco State Saturday afternoon at Warrior Baseball Field.

The Warriors won both ends of a twinbill for the first time since the season opener on Feb. 2 with 8-6 and 6-2 wins over the SF State Gators. Cal State Stanislaus, which also won on Friday in San Francisco, improved to 10-18 overall and 5-13 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Scott Stetson went 3-for-5 and Nick Molina had two hits to lead the Warriors in game one. Then, Tyler Murphy threw a seven-inning complete game for the nightcap victory.

The Warriors' offense stayed hot in game one, scattering 11 more hits — running the recent total to 32 hits in a three-game stretch, a streak started a week ago in the series finale against Sonoma State.

Against San Francisco State (10-15, 9-10 CCAA) on Saturday, the first eight batters in the order had at least a hit each with Stetson setting the table at the top of the lineup. The Warriors scored three runs in each of the third and fourth innings for a 7-4 lead. Marcus Mastrobuoni and Michael Chavarria each doubled in the third to highlight the Stanislaus third inning.

Nick Voumard was again sharp on the mound with another solid start. While not dominating, the sophomore gave up five runs on seven hits in a qualify 7-inning start.

In game two, Mastrobuoni and Molina each had two hits. Molina tripled to left-center to score Chavarria in the second to tie the game at 1-1. Stanislaus would score at least a run each ininng, except for the first, en route to the 6-2 win.

Like Voumard, Murphy also gave the depeleted Stanislaus pitching staff a much needed appearance. He allowed just an earned run on four hits in seven innings for his best outing of the year.

On Sunday, the Warriors will go for their first CCAA series sweep since 2012. The Warriors swept San Francisco State from April 20-22, 2012.
