SF State avoids series sweep with finale win

SAN FRANCISCO — Michael Chavarria went 3-for-4 on Sunday, but that was just about half of the Stanislaus offense as San Francisco State won the rubber game of the four-game set to avoid a Cal State Stanislaus sweep.

The Warriors finally ran out of quality pitching as the SF State Gators knocked off Stanislaus hurlers to win 12-4. Stanislaus used five pitchers in Sunday's series finale but dropped to 10-19 overall and 5-14 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Chavarria completed a big weekend, going 7-for-14 with a double and drove in three runs to lead the Warriors while extending his hitting streak to six games. He also walked three times and scored three times. Marcus Mastrobuoni, who went 1-for-3, also had a seven-hit weekend and batted .467 (7-for-15). As a team, the Stanislaus offense batted .328 with 43 hits.

After taking a 3-1 lead in the second, the Warriors allowed four runs in the third as the Gators turned the tide. SF State chased starter Blake Wilson after 3 1/3 innings as he gave up seven runs on nine hits. Donnie Fairchilds got the Warriors out of the inning in the fourth before Harper White made his first appearance in the fifth.

SF State (11-15, 10-10 CCAA) right-fielder highlighted the Gators' third with a three-run triple. Fernando Escobard went 3-for-4 and Nick Jackson was 3-for-5 to lead SFSU.

With outstanding pitching and effective hitting, the Warriors were looking for their first four-game series sweep since 2012 after taking the first three against San Francisco State.

Cal State Stanislaus will be in San Bernardino for a four-game series against Cal State San Bernardino. The series starts on Thursday at 6 p.m.
