SAN BERNARDINO — A five-run eighth inning gave the Cal State Stanislaus baseball team a series opening victory on the road as the Warriors defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 5-4, at Fiscalini Field Friday night.
Scott Stetson had three more hits and
Marcus Mastrobuoni went yard to lead the Stanislaus offense and head coach
Kenny Leonesio got another quality start from
Chris Senn as the Warriors improved to 11-19 overall and 6-14 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Cal State Stanislaus has won four of its last five games and is 5-2 in its last seven.
Stetson's double in the eighth inning drove in two runs and
Stevie Robinson plated another run with a double down the left-field line to cut the Coyotes lead down to 4-3. Then, Mastrobuoni followed Robinson's at-bat with a two-run bomb to left to put the Warriors ahead, 5-4.
Aaron Godinez, the most steady arm out of the bullpen, completely shut-down San Bernardino in the final two innings. He retired all six batters in order and recorded four strikeouts to preserve the win and earned a save — his third.
Senn, who only made his collegiate debut on March 14 in a spot-start, picked up his second consecutive victory with a seven-inning outing. He gave up four runs on five hits, struckout two and walked three in the longest start of his four-game Stanislaus career.
Stetson, who batted leadoff, went 3-for-5 with two doubles to again lead the Stanislaus offense. Robinson and
James Heller both went 2-for-4.
Warren Fishback gave CSUSB (6-23, 4-16 CCCAA) a 3-0 lead with a three-run homer in the first. The Coyotes added a run in the third on a Jose Hernandez single that scored Kevin Meriwether.
The four-game set continues with a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 2 p.m.
