TURLOCK — Justin Donatella was as good as advertised as the UC San Diego ace turned in a masterful performance in the Tritons' win Friday night. The Tritons opened the four-game set by putting down a speed bump in front of the surging Warriors with a 11-0 decision.
Donatella was perfect through four innings and gave up just one hit before the eighth inning to lift UC San Diego to 27-14 overall and 22-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. UCSD remains in a virtual tie for first place with Cal Poly Pomona, which beat Cal State L.A. on Friday.
The Tritons ace, and arguably the best hurler in the West region, cruised to the victory — his eighth of the year in nine decisions — by allowing just two hits in eight shutout innings. Donatella, the CCAA and West Region pitcher of the week entering the series, struckout six Warriors. He dropped his ERA to 0.55 for the season and has now recorded 88 strikeouts.
Cal State Stanislaus (18-21, 13-16 CCAA) saw a hot streak slowed down a bit in the loss — but still remains one of the hottest teams in the CCAA having won 12 of its last 16 games.
The Warriors hung in with the 27th ranked UC San Diego team for four innings, however, a six-run fifth inning where UCSD sent 12 batters to the plate started the rout. In the inning, UCSD played station-to-station baseball with the first six Tritons all reached and scored. They also benefited from three bases loaded walks or hit-batsman.
UC San Diego snagged four more runs in the seventh, again with three bases loaded walks, to take a 11-0 lead.
Nick Molina ledoff the eighth inning with a double to deep center-field with UCSD's Brandon Shirley crashing into the wall to start a rally. But, after a groundout and
James Heller being hit by a pitch, Dontatella struckout two Warriors to end the scoring chance.
Jack Rupe pitched the ninth for UCSD and struckout the side to close out the game. Justin Flatt went 3-for-3 with a double and Gradeigh Sanchez was 3-for-5 to lead UC San Diego.
Stanislaus will try to rebound on Saturday to face pitchers not named Donatella with the doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. The Warriors are scheduled to send
Nick Voumard to the mound in game one, followed by
Tyler Murphy in the nightcap.
