No. 27 UC San Diego silences, frustrates Warriors

TURLOCK — Facing one of the best pitching staffs in NCAA Division II, the once red-hot Cal State Stanislaus offense cool-off while the Valley temperature rises as the 27th ranked UC San Diego shut-out the Warriors twice on Saturday.

UC San Diego drew 11 walks and scored six times in the fifth for a 10-0 game one win before handing Stanislaus pitcher Tyler Murphy a tough-luck 2-0 loss in the nightcap to sweep the California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader. The Tritons played great defense behind their great pitching, and with impressive plate discipline they have now taken the first three games of the series to improve to 29-14 overall and 24-10 in CCAA play.

On the other side of the diamond, the Cal State Stanislaus saw its hot streak came to a screeching halt and dropped to 18-23, 13-18 CCAA. The Warriors were shutout for the third consecutive game — the first time that has happened during the CCAA era which began in 1999.

Despite the loss, Murphy gave Warrior Nation a positive with another outstanding performance on the mound in his third complete game. He gave up just six hits, struckout four and walk "only" four. Both runs in the nightcap were unearned resulting from two fielding miscues that led to both UCSD runs in the first inning.

UCSD's game three starter Alon Leichman out-dueled Murphy and continued the Tritons' dominance on the mound against the Stanislaus offense. In three games, UC San Diego has allowed just 11 hits and held the Warriors to a .129 batting average and a .187 on-base percentage.

UC San Diego is now second in the CCAA and 10th in NCAA Division II with a 2.78 team ERA. After Saturday's twinbill, the Tritions now lead the nation with 12 shutouts.

Tyler Howley led the Tritons with a 2-for-5, 3-RBI game one on Saturday. His two-run doubled in the fifth followed a Warrior error that would have ended the inning at 3-0. Instead, the inning continued with another two-run single by Gradeigh Sanchez that made it 8-0 by the time the inning was over.

Nick Voumard started game one on Saturday but his control was off. Couple that with a patient Tritons lineup that looks for free bases and capitalizes on mistakes, Voumard was chased after 4 2/3 innings after giving up eight walks. He did strikeout five and only allowed three hits, but the six-run fifth turned out to be devastating.

In the three games so far this series, UCSD has received 23 walks with four Tritons being hit by a pitch.

Defensively, UCSD has also played flawlessly all over the field. When the Warriors do hit the ball hard, every play was made by the Tritons no matter the degree of difficultly. UCSD has not committed an error in 100 fielding chances in the series.

Marcus Mastrobuoni did go 3-for-3 with a double in game one before a 0-for-3 nightcap on Saturday. Michael Chavarria and Patrick Mulry had the only two hits off of Leichman in game two. Chavarria saw his 16-game on-base streak end in game one when he went 0-for-4 without a free base.

Sunday's series finale pits Troy Cruz, who has been the starting third baseman in the first three games, against Warrior freshman Blake Wilson on the mound. First pitch is at Noon.
