TURLOCK — The young Cal State Stanislaus pitching staff had to do some growing up fast this week and no one did that better than
Blake Wilson on Sunday in the series finale against No. 27 UC San Diego.
Coach
Kenny Leonesio gave Wilson the confidence and the freshman responded by getting out of numerous jams as Cal State Stanislaus defeated the Tritons, 2-1, to avoid the four-game series sweep. The Warriors salvaged a win this weekend to improve to 19-23 overall and 14-18 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Stanislaus snapped a 9-game losing streak against UC San Diego in the victory as the Tritons dropped to 29-15, 24-11 in CCAA play.
Wilson earned his first collegiate victory on the mound by allowing just four hits in 5 2/3 innings of work without giving up a run. He struck out two and walked three — but was able to get out of trouble three times in the game with Tritons in scoring position.
Wilson, who was making just his fourth start, got out of a jam in the first by picking off a runner at second. He also got two flyouts with two on to survive the third inning. In the fourth, a UCSD runner reached second with one out, but a groundout to third and a strikeout by Wilson ended that threat.
While he wasn't his usual dominant-self,
Aaron Godinez earned a 10-out save despite allowing a run on four hits and walked four in 3-plus innings of work. Godinez had to get out a major jam himself after UCSD loaded the bases in the ninth with one out. He struck out Justin Flatt and got a lazy flyout to center from Tyler Plantier to end the game.
Offensively for the Warriors, they finally put up a run in the third inning on a wild pitch, ending a 27-inning scoring draught against UC San Diego. The Warriors tagged on a second run in the fourth on a
Nick Molina single that scored
Marcus Mastrobuoni, who had doubled with one out.
Things got interesting since the Warriors were not able to add any insurance runs in the late innings while the Tritons kept on the pressure. UCSD had runners in scoring position in every inning after the sixth inning before stranding runners at the corners in the seventh, left a runner on second base in the eighth and left the bases loaded in the ninth.
Molina finished the day 3-for-4 including a double in the sixth.
Scott Stetson went 2-for-4 and Mastrobuoni doubled and scored in the fourth. Mastrobuoni ended up 4-for-12 for the series and Molina batted .417 (5-for-12) against UCSD this weekend.
UC San Diego first baseman Michael Mann went 3-for-4 on Sunday to close out a 8-for-16 series against Cal State Stanislaus.
As for Wilson, he probably solidified his spot as the fourth starter, as part of the youngest pitching rotation in the conference, behind redshirt freshman
Chris Senn, sophomore
Nick Voumard and another redshirt freshman
Tyler Murphy.
The Warriors have another challenge coming up next week when they travel to first place No. 18 Cal Poly Pomona in Pomona next weekend. The Broncos swept Cal State L.A. this week and boasts the best team ERA in the CCAA.
