Warriors Fall 3-1 To No. 15 Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif.- Friday was game one of the series between the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors and the No. 15 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos. The Warriors kept the Bronco offense to just four hits, but untimely walks pushed CPP ahead 3-1.

The Warriors drop to a CCAA record of 14-19 and hold an overall 19-24 tally. With the win, CPP now holds an overall 32-11 tally complete with a 24-9 mark in conference play.

Starting on the mound for the CSUS was Colby DeVries, who, after facing just seven batters in the first two innings, struggled to find his accuracy and walked the bases loaded in the third. He was pulled out and Donnie Fairchilds was sent to the mound. The home team scored on the next play though as the Broncos drew yet another walk. The next three Broncos were retired in order, but a sacrifice fly was executed and CPP jumped ahead 2-0.

A run was not again scored until the top of the sixth when Marcus Mastrobuoni singled through the right side and scored Nick Ippolito from second. Due to a strong performance from the CPP pitching staff however, that would be the only run of the game for the Warriors.

Fairchilds pitched four innings in relief and after that first inning, no more Broncos scored on his watch. He allowed just two hits through the showing and struck out one with a total of 47 pitches thrown.

In the seventh Chris Sauls took the bump, after a couple of advantageous plays for CPP, they found themselves with a runner on third base. A pitched was thrown that was too much too handle and a passed ball resulted in the Broncos' final run of the game. The scoreboard read its final tally 3-1 in favor of the home team.

The series between the two squads will continue Saturday with the final regular season doubleheader at Scolinos Field. Game one is set to begin at 11 a.m.
