Game Recap: Softball |

Warriors beat SF State twice with late rallies

TURLOCK — Twice on Friday the Cal State Stanislaus softball team needed late-game clutch hitting in order to win — and the Warriors did just that to come away with two victories in sweeping San Francisco State, 3-1 and 5-3.

A three-run sixth inning in game one and a two-run fifth in the nightcap were the keys to Cal State Stanislaus improving to 13-23 overall and 5-17 in conference play. San Francisco State dropped to 8-28, 3-19 CCAA.

Jessica Varady struckout seven batters and gave up one unearned run in the opener to earn the win in the circle to improve her personal record to 8-7. Cheyenne Harper was sharp in relief in the nightcap as she threw four shutout innings and gave up just two hits to improve to 2-7. Karina Callazo, who struck out six in three innings, left with a 3-3 score in the third.

In game one, San Francisco State took a 1-0 lead on a RBI single up the middle that scored Jennifer Lewis. But the Warriors answered right back with three runs in the home half of the sixth. Cassidy Duke ledoff with a triple and scored on a fielder's choice. Varady singled and eventually scored on a RBI hit by Deenah San Luis. That sequence also scored pinch-runner Angela Mendoza on a throwing error by the SFSU shortstop.

Nicolette Vizcaino went 2-for-3 and Natalie Dorsey had two hits to lead the Warriors offensively in the first game.

With the score tied at 3-3 in game two, the Warriors rallied in the fifth with three extra-base hits. Vizcaino started with a double down the left-field line and a flyout later scored on a double by Holly Mooring. An Alex Rowell triple scored Mendoza, who pinch ran for Mooring, for the final count.

Mooring and Rowell each finished 2-for-3 with Mooring collecting two doubles.

Games three and four of the series is on Saturday, starting at Noon. The Warriors will be looking for their first CCAA series sweep since March 4-5, 2011, against Cal State East Bay.
