TURLOCK — From the sixth inning of game one on, San Francisco State looked like a different team as the Gators turned the tides on Saturday and took a pair from Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday.
The Gators scored four runs in the final two innings of game one — including three runs in the seventh to past the Warriors — to win 4-2. Then, that lineup kept hitting and the Gators played solid defense behind a strong start by Jenny Obbema to win the finale, 8-0, for the twinbill sweep.
Cal State Stanislaus (13-25 overall) and San Francisco State (10-28) are tied at 5-19 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play again.
For a while, the Warriors looked like they were going to win their fourth straight over SF State in the first game with Jessica Varaday again dominating in the circle. She cruised through the first five innings and allowed just a hit and two baserunners. Varady had four 1-2-3 innings before the sixth inning.
But, with a 2-0 Stanislaus lead, things started changing for the worse for the Warriors in the sixth. SF State got a run back on three straight hits that was capped by a Jennifer Lewis RBI single to left that scored Courtney Gravel.
In the seventh, the Gators worked the bases loaded after an international walk. Then, Varady walked in the tying run on a close pitch ahead of a two-run single by Lewis to give SF State the 4-2 win.
The Warriors were led by
Natalie Dorsey and
Morgan Balestreri each with two hits in the first game. Varady had a two-run triple in the first inning to help her own cause.
San Francisco State got the confidence and kept the momentum going in the series finale, scoring four runs in the first two innings for a 4-0 lead. The Gators then added four more runs in the seventh to put the Warriors away. All the while, starter Jenny Obbema some-how figured out the Stanislaus offense as the Warriors managed just two hits in the first four innings.
A double in the fifth by Balestreri set up two runners in scoring position with one out, but Obbema got out of the jam. A single by Varady in the sixth didn't amount to much of a scoring chance and then the Warriors went down in order in the seventh to end the day.
Obbema finished with a four-hit complete game where she struckout three and walked four. Stanislaus left eight baserunners on base in game two.
Varady was also 2-for-3 at the plate in the second game.
In the doubleheader, Lewis went 5-for-9 with two doubles and seven runs batted in to lead the SF State offense. She also played stellar defense at shortstop.
