Poon heads in winner as Warriors pull out OT thriller

LACEY, Wash. — Jade Poon's golden goal in sudden victory overtime provided the ending to a non-conference battle as Stanislaus State survived from being down a player for a 4-3 win at Saint Martin's Friday afternoon.

Poon and Kirsten Coleman, the Warriors' scoring leaders in 2014, both scored twice in leading Stanislaus as the Warriors improved to 3-1-0 on the season. But the win did not come easy as Saint Martin's used an "inspired" second half to rally from down 3-0 to even the score.

Then, Stanislaus had to play the final four minutes and overtime with just 10 players as a Warrior received a red card for the first time since 2005.

"I am very proud of the mental toughness this team showed today. We learned a lot about ourselves," head coach Gabriel Bolton said. "Cruising to a 4-0 or 5-0 win might have been less stressful. But it would not have revealed our character the same way."

Coleman and Poon connected for the winner at 95:51 with Coleman sending in a play into the box for Poon to finish with a header. Poon now has three goals on the season because she got the Warriors on the board first in the 27th minute with a runaway dribble-in score from a Sabrina Williamson pass.

Sandwiched between two Poon goals were two scores by Coleman, both assisted by Dani Rodrigues, within a four-minute window early in the second half.

Ferociously, Saint Martin's scored three times during a 11-minute stretch to tie the match at 78:17. To make matters worse for Stanislaus, the Saints played with an one-man advantage in the final four minutes when a red card was issued to Maryssa McDuffy. Stan State also had to fend-off numerous SMU shots before Chelsea Lewandowski ended the game with six saves.

However, the Warriors stayed tough and capitalized on their only shot in overtime for the winner.

"Winning the way we did gives us confidence that we can overcome anything," Bolton added. "On the road, down to 10 players, fighting off an inspired opponent...absolutely nothing phased us."

Abby McFaul scored twice for Saint Martin's and two goalkeepers combined for eight saves for the Saints.

The victory also extended Stanislaus State's unbeaten streak against a GNAC opponent to 13 at 12-0-1. The Warriors will look to add another win to that record on Sunday when they take on Central Washington in Ellensburg, Wash.
