Volleyball opens CCAA play with win, off to program best start at 7-0

TURLOCK — Mallori Gibson-Rossi and the 2015 Warriors' home debut was a huge success late Tuesday afternoon as Stanislaus State took little time to blow away San Francisco State to open CCAA play with a straight set win.

Needing just a few minutes over an hour to pound away the attacks, the Warriors improve to 7-0 with a 25-19, 25-12, 25-13 win over the visiting Gators. The 7-0 start is Stanislaus's program best during the CCAA era, besting the 6-0 start set by the 1999 squad.

The win was also Gibson-Rossi's first at Fitzpatrick Arena as the head coach of the Warriors.

It was yet another match with effective hitting attacks for the Stanislaus side. Collectively, they hit .275 with just nine errors in 91 attempts while putting away 34 kills. Cervantes was the sharpest of them all, going 8 for 13 without an error (.615).

No Warrior needed double-digits to post this victory as the balanced offense was led by Taylor Massengale's nine kills. Cervantes had eight and Blair Ehrlich smashed seven. Cervantes also had 11 digs and Ehrlich 10 to support Hailey Gruetzmacher's team-best 16 digs.

At the net, Massengale blocked seven shots with a solo and six assisted blocks.

Stanislaus went out to a 9-2 in set number two and never looked back. They eventuall scored four straight points in the end to close out the set, thanks to three errors by SF State. In the third set, after a Clairissa Larry kill to make it 19-11, SF State again made three straight errors to give the Warriors a 22-11 lead. At 22-13, a SFSU attack error, a Massengale kill and a Cervantes service ace ended the match.

In the end, SF State (2-6, 0-1 CCAA) had 28 attacking errors, four service errors and seven receiving errors while the Warriors picked up eight service aces in the match.

Stan State hits the road once again this weekend as they will face Cal State L.A. (8-1, 1-0 CCAA) on Friday and Cal State Dominguez Hills (2-6, 0-0) on Saturday.
