TURLOCK — Stanislaus State and San Francisco State played a defensive chess-match in the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener for both teams Friday night as the rivals battled to a scoreless draw.
San Francisco State (3-2-1, 0-0-1 CCAA) held the Warriors scoreless for the first time in five games as the Gators left Warrior Stadium with a point in the standings to start the year.
The Warriors, though, still extended their unbeaten streak against SF State as they are now 17-0-5 in the last 22 contests against SF State. The Warriors did win the last 10 meetings since the teams played to a 0-0 tie on Sept. 28, 2008 in San Francisco.
"I'm very proud of our effort defensively tonight. After giving up 6 goals last weekend it was an area of focus this week. The team really defended with heart and pride," said head coach
Gabriel Bolton.
The stalemate was much like most of the match-ups between these two teams in recent years. In the last four head-to-head meetings, matches were decided by two or less goals with two overtime matches won by Stanislaus State.
SF State, being the aggressor in the second half, ended up edging the Warriors 11-10 in shots (5-4 on goal) for the night. The Warriors were held without a corner kick chance in the game.
"San Francisco State is a tough team. They get lots of numbers behind the ball and play with great intensity. Full credit to them for a great battle tonight," added Bolton.
Chelsea Lewandowski finished with four saves, as did SF State goalie Karin Nordin.
The Warriors, now 4-1-1 overall and 0-0-1 in CCAA play, host Cal State Monterey Bay (2-4-0, 0-1-0 CCAA) on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Otters lost at Cal State East Bay, 1-0, Friday night in Hayward.
