TURLOCK —
Gabby Squarcia provided the only scoring needed as the Warriors' stealth defense stifled another CCAA opponent as Stanislaus State defeated Cal State Monterey Bay, 1-0, on a hot Sunday afternoon at Warrior Stadium.
Squarcia's goal in the 75th minute finally melted the Otters as the Warriors improved to 5-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association after the first conference weekend. Despite being out-shot by Stan State, 15-4, Cal State Monterey Bay hung in the match and kept the Warriors at bay on home pitch.
"That was an absolutely fantastic effort on our part today. In that heat after playing OT on Friday night the players displayed tremendous heart," head coach
Gabriel Bolton said. "We talked a lot about playing our style. We always want to dominate the ball. No question we did that today which was great to see."
The Warriors were held without a goal in Friday's draw against SF State and it took more than 74 minutes to net a score on Sunday. Squarcia's fancy footwork-goal finally ended the 188-minute scoring draught that electrified the home crowd.
After
Gabriela Vargas some how got a pass through defenders to Squarcia atop of the box, Squarcia juked around two defenders to find an open lane to blast the shot to the far post to make it 1-0 at 74:33. The goal was like her first goal as a Warrior back on Sept. 5 when she scored on a similar play, dribbling around defenders to hit the back of the net.
"When the other team is packed in as much as Monterey Bay was in the last 30 minutes it takes a little individual brilliance. Gabby is capable of that and she gave us a great moment," Bolton commented.
The Stanislaus defense again didn't give its opponents too many looks. The Otters (2-5-0, 0-2-0 CCAA) managed two shots in each half with one shot on goal early in the match. Countering the scoring draught, the defense has held opponents scoreless for the last 200-plus minutes while recording the third shutout this season.
"After giving up six goals in two games last week defense has been a point of emphasis. I'm proud of how far we have come in a week," added Bolton.
The Warriors will have to hit the road again, this time to San Diego County, to start a stretch of four away matches in the next two weeks. Friday, Stanislaus takes on new CCAA team Cal State San Marcos at 12:30 p.m. before facing UC San Diego on Sunday.
