TURLOCK — In the end, the visiting Lumberjacks put together a few more points than the Warriors to leave Turlock with a five-set win Friday night at Fitzpatrick Arena.
In a closely contested match throughout, Humboldt State held off a late surge by Stanislaus State for a 25-14, 24-26, 25-18, 18-25, 15-12 win to improve to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. For the Warriors, they suffered their first home loss and dropped consecutive matches for the first time in 2015 in another five-set heartbreaker.
Stanislaus State, now 8-3 overall and 2-3 in the CCAA, will look to rebound against Sonoma State Saturday night. The Seawolves improved to 6-3, 2-1 after sweeping Chico State 3-0 Friday.
Paige Walker's hard smash had gotten Stan State within one at 13-12 in the decisive fifth, but back-to-back hitting errors handed the match to the Lumberjacks.
Jocelyn Cervantes led all players with 18 kills and
Taylor Massengale had 12 kills to lead the Stanislaus offense. But it was the defense on both sides that made the different with numberous great defensive digs. Walker had 22 digs,
Maddi Seidl and
Sierrah Miller — making her first start at Libero — each had 21 digs while Cervantes chipped in 13 digs for a double-double. In all, the Warriors had 99 digs as a team.
Seidl also had 47 assists for the second straight match. It was her third consecutive 40-assist night.
Another key to the match were the service game as the Warriors had 10 receiving errors but did pick up nine aces to go with eight errors. Humboldt, thought, won the battle at the net with 13 total blocks to the Warriors' five.
Simone Hayden led HSU with 15 kills and 20 digs with four aces. The Lumberjacks had 92 digs, led by Haley Biles with 24.
