TURLOCK — Against one of the elites of the California Collegiate Athletic Association, the Warriors were competitive but still fell to Sonoma State in straight sets, 25-16, 25-19, 25-17, Saturday night.
The Seawolves won their third straight, and seventh of their last ten matches, to improve to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play to hang near the top of the standings with the other CCAA elite programs in volleyball (UC San Diego, Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona).
Stanislaus State, which started the year 7-0, is now 8-4 overall and 2-4 in CCAA play after losing three straight. Sonoma State historically has had the Warriors' numbers as SSU extended its win-streak over Stanislaus to 16.
But it took another effective hitting night for Sonoma State against a challenging Warrior squad. The Seawolves made little mistakes and hit at a .358 clip — 49 kills on 109 swings with just 10 errors — to counter a solid night by the Stan State offense (.225). In the end, three SSU players were in double digits and every Seawolve with a kill had a .290 percentage or better.
Taylor Massengale and
Courtney Lewis each had 10 kills to lead the Warriors with
Lindsay Skadeland chipping in nine spikes. Skadeland and Lewis each also had three block-assists.
Maddi Seidl led with 10 digs and 32 assists.
Caylie Seitz led SSU with 15 kills while Kelsey McIntire and Madelyn Densberger each had 10 kills. SSU smacked Chico State around Friday night by hitting .344 to win 3-0 after posting a .296 average at Cal Poly Pomona last Saturday in another weep.
The Warriors are back on the road again next week with a Tuesday match at San Francisco State and a trip to Chico State on Saturday.
