LA JOLLA — A couple of streaks ended for the Stanislaus State women's soccer team, but not before a valiant effort showcased by the Warriors. UC San Diego scored early and held-on and held-off the Warriors in a 1-0 decision Sunday afternoon.
Despite finishing the contest with just nine players on the field, the Tritons' only goal early in the game turned out to be enough for them to improved to 6-3-0, 2-2-0 CCAA while the Warriors split their SoCal road trip and will return home with 6-2-1, 2-1-1 records.
"We gave a terrific effort today playing against a very physical UCSD team," head coach
Gabriel Bolton said. "I was really proud of how we battled for 90 minutes and really kept our composure during some challenging moments."
For the Warriors' solid defense, the scoreless streak ended at 320 minutes which spanned over three-plus matches. UC San Diego also snapped a three-game losing streak to Stan State during the regular season.Stanislaus State out-shot UC San Diego, 16-14 for the match and peppered the Tritons goalie Kelcie Brodsky with eight shots in the second half.
Kate O'Laughlin netted a back-post header from a Kiera Bocchino free kick at 18:15 to put UCSD ahead 1-0. UC San Diego picked up a red card in the 40th minute and was forced to play a player down for the rest of the first half. Then, another Triton received a red card at 83:10, which meant UCSD played with nine players in the final six-plus minutes. Both red cards resulted from a second caution.
"Every game in the CCAA is difficult. That's what makes the conference so fun," Bolton added. "Now we will regroup and focus on our next opponent."
Stan State's next opponent is Cal State East Bay, where the Warriors will visit for a 4:30 p.m. match in Hayward on Wednesday.
