HAYWARD — The Stanislaus State women's soccer team recorded yet another shutout as the Warriors blanked Cal State East Bay, 2-0, Wednesday evening at Pioneer Stadium in Hayward.
Kirsten Coleman and
Gabby Squarcia provided the scoring for the Warriors as they improved to 7-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. While it may be a little too early to look at the conference race, Stanislaus State moves into a three-way tie for first with Cal State San Bernardino and Sonoma State.
"That was our best performance of the season. We finally started to look comfortable," head coach
Gabriel Bolton said after the match. "Offensively we created an incredible number of chances in the match. We were dangerous both in the run of play and in the run of play. "
The blanking of the Pioneers marks the fifth time this season that Stanislaus came away with a shutout. It is the Warriors' fourth shutout in the last five matches having allowed just one score since returning from the Washington road trip.
Bolton attributed the current defensive success to a number of players, including midfielder
Nicole Bare, for controlling the match.
"I thought Bare controlled the midfield with her skill and strength in the air. She was very impactful and a big reason we shut them out," Bolton added. "Our back line and keeper were really in sync tonight. I was great to see that level of teamwork."
On the scoring front, Coleman netted her fourth goal of the year in the 15th minute by picking a loose ball. After
Jade Poon blasted a shot at CSUEB goalkeeper Amanda Valentine, who wasn't able to keep it covered, Coleman took the rebound into the net to make it 1-0.
Squarcia added the second goal in the 78th minute by dribbling into box for the shot after receving a
Gabriela Vargas pass from the right side. The duo have connected on three of the four Squarcia goals this season.
Cal State East Bay (4-7-0, 2-3-0 CCAA) was out-shot 15-7 and had two shots on goal, both picked up by Stan State goalie
Chelsea Lewandowski.
The Warriors will get a few days to train before making their next trek up to Chico for a match against the rival Wildcats on Sunday.
