Villegas scores winner 16 seconds into OT to lift Warriors

HAYWARD — The Warriors needed a little bit of extra time to stage the comeback. Just a little. As it turned out, 16 seconds was all they needed as Manny Villegas knocked in the golden winner to lift Stanislaus State over Cal State East Bay, 3-2, in a thriller at Pioneer Stadium Wednesday night.

Villegas helped the Warriors complete the comeback after trailing in the match twice as Stan State improved to 9-1-0 and 4-1-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

The upset minded Cal State East Bay Pioneers almost pulled it off on home pitch before falling to 2-7-0, 1-4-0 CCAA.

The Pioneers led at 1-0 and 2-1, but the Warriors responded and even the score both times to set-up the extra time excitement. East Bay went up 1-0 with just seconds left in the first half on a goal by Kevin Perez.

In the second half, Warrior freshman Ryan Chaney continues to shine with his fourth goal of the season at 50:16 to tie the score. However, about 11 minutes later, Kalle Sjogrell gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead finishing a rebound shot.

With about 10 minutes left to play in regulation, Luis Hernandez sent a pass in over the top to Josue Barajas, who tracked it down and chipped the shot over the Pioneers goalkeeper Adrian Topete to tie the score again.

The battle continued to the end to force overtime and after a brief break, the Warriors took the restart to their right side and Villegas took a 10-yard shot for the winner. It was Villegas's fifth goal of the season.

In the end, Topete had nine saves against the Stanislaus offense, which put up 17 shots (12 on goal). Stan State goalie Russ Klabough recorded seven saves.

Stanislaus State runs its goal total to 35 this season after 10 matches, closing in on team record 36 set in 1998.
