Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stanislaus holds off CSUSM, remains unbeaten at home

TURLOCK — The same duo picked up double-doubles for the second consecutive night as the Stanislaus State women's basketball team hangs on to edge Cal State San Marcos, 63-60, to stay undefeated at home this season.

Riley Holladay had 15 points with 11 rebounds to earn her second straight double-double to lead the Warriors as they improved to 8-4 overall and 4-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Stanislaus is now 5-0 this season at the Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena after the New Year's weekend sweep.

Erika Larsen also picked up another double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds — which followed her 10-point, 11-rebound game Friday against Cal State L.A. Larsen also had three blocked shots. Reana Hardin scored 11 points and Ana Burch scored her fifth consecutive double figure game with 10 points. Holladay also added four assists and two blocks to her totals.

"I just started to play with fun, I haven't been playing with a lot of confidence lately," Larsen said. "(The hoiday break) allowed me to take a breather and remebered to play my game the way I knew how to play."

Despite being in a little bit of foul trouble, Larsen helped the Warriors dominate the inside game. The Warriors dominated the boards, out-rebounding San Marcos, 53-38. Some of those rebounds turned into points as Stan State scored 21 second-chance points with 32 points from inside the paint.

The Warriors led by as many as 10 points in the third quarter after an 8-3 run capped by a Holladay free throw. However, CSUSM rallied to actually take a lead to start the fourth period. A Savannah Camp jumper at 9:48 capped a 8-0 run and moments later, a three pointer by Jenkins had the Cougars up 53-51.

Stanislaus used a 11-2 final surge to regained the lead during a 5:40 stretch when CSUSM shot just 1 of 7 from the field. A Larsen free throw at 2:30 remaining gave the Warriors a 62-55 lead that they eventually held on. CSUSM had a chance to tie the game in the final 11 seconds, trailing by three. After two timeouts, a Camp three-point attempt rimmed out to end the game.

Cal State San Marcos, the CCAA's newest member, was led by Ashley Jenkins who had 18 points with seven assists. The Cougars fell to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

Stanislaus State will take the longest, and toughest, CCAA trip of the year, going south to Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday and travel all the way up to Arcata to face Humboldt State on Saturday. The trip stretches over 1,400 miles and with nearly 30 hours of bus rides at two of the most challenging arenas to play in.

"We are going to try and make this a fun, enjoyable adventure. We will have some fun, do some team bonding and watch a few movies like the entire Star Wars trilogy," head coach Wayman Strickland said.
