Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stanislaus snaps streaks, keeps rolling in conference play

POMONA — Thursday night's victory at Kellogg Arena has been a long time coming — nearly 13 years, in fact. With a strong second half — especially the fourth quarter — Stanislaus State snapped an eight-game losing streak to Cal Poly Pomona and won at Pomona for the first time since 2003.

Reana Hardin led the Warriors with 17 points and Riley Holladay scored 13 points and pulled seven rebounds as the Warriors defeated Cal Poly Pomona soundly, 67-50. The Warriors improved to 9-4 overall and 5-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play to stay in fourth place in the conference standings.

The Warriors snapped a 12-game losing streak when playing at Pomona's Kellogg Gym with their last win there on Feb. 1, 2003. Stanislaus also beat the Broncos for the first time since Sept. 19, 2011 in Turlock in the series dominated by Pomona.

But it was Stanislaus who dominated on Thursday, especially in the fourth quarter. The Warriors out-scored Pomona, 20-10 in the fourth quarter to pull away. Stan State scored 11 of the game's final 14 points, including 7 of 10 from the free throw line.

Cal Poly Pomona (4-10, 2-5 CCAA) led by one at the half but Stanislaus quickly took command of the game on a 12-4 run that included five free throws by Hardin. The rally was capped a three-pointer by Holladay to make it 35-28 at the third quarter media timeout. The Warriors didn't stop there. After a Mary Williams layup, they took off on another surge, this time a 7-0 run, started by another Holladay trey to stretch the lead to 42-30.

Hardin ended up 3-for-6 from the arc and made 6 of her 7 free throw tries for the game-high. She was just two points shy of tying her career high in scoring. Cassidy Sanders-Curry led the team with eight rebounds while Erika Larsen and Ana Burch chipped in 10 points apiece.

Either team shot well on the night, particularly on the foul line. The Warriors were 15 of 27 from the charity stripe (55.6 percent), but Pomona was worse at 37.5 percent (6 for 16). The Warriors made 34.8 percent of their shots for the night, but was better in the second half at 14 for 27 after a 9 for 39 first half.

Cal Poly Pomona committed 24 turnovers with the Warriors credited with 15 steals and scored 20 points off those Broncos miscues.

Jordyn Shane led the Broncos with 17 points and Priscilla Brooks had 15 rebounds.

Cal State East Bay, UC San Diego and Cal State Dominguez Hills all won on Thursday, leaving the Warriors standing in fourth place going into Saturday's game at Humboldt State. The Lumberjacks narrowly beat Chico State, 77-71, to improve to 4-3 in CCAA play.
