Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Stanislaus falls at 19th ranked Chico State in lone CCAA meeting

CHICO — In the only meeting that counts towards the conference records of the season, the No. 19 ranked Chico State Wildcats led from the tip to blow away Stanislaus State, 85-50, Saturday night inside Acker Gym.

Four Wildcats scored in double digits with Robert Duncan turning in a double-double as Chico State improved to 10-2 in the CCAA to keep pace with UC San Diego near the top of the conference standings. Chico State, which also handed the Warriors a 84-69 loss in a non-conference game in Turlock back on Dec. 9, continues to have the upper hand in this rivalry.

Alek Carlson had 10 points to lead the Warriors (5-12, 4-8 CCAA) but Stan State suffered its seventh straight loss. Carlson made his mark with two three-pointers but the rest of the team was just 2 of 14 from the arc. For the night, Stanislaus shot 34.6 percent and fell behind by as many as 19 points just before the end of the first half.

The Warriors held a brief lead early at 9-6 after a Kyi Thomas jumper at 14:35. However, a 10-0 Chico State run ensued and the Warriors could never get close.

A 15-0 Chico State run that included eight points from Tanner Giddings in the middle of the second half doomed Stan State as the Warriors fell behind, 74-43.

Thomas finished with nine points, which is the same total out-put by Kyle Gouveia and Vondel Faniel. Christian Bayne, who had scored in double digits in the first 16 games of the season, was just 2 for 10 from the field with four free throws to finish with eight points.

Chico State also dominated the boards, out-rebounding Stan State, 44-23.

The Warriors will look for much better results and try to end the skid on Friday when they host Cal State East Bay on Homecoming night.
