Warriors came up short on upset bid against #7 Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA — Against the best defense in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, the Stanislaus State men's basketball team shot under 30 percent for the first time this season and lost to No. 7 Cal Poly Pomona, 59-48, Thursday night.

The Warriors were within reach of the first place team — and was just eight points down with 3:32 to play — for most of the game before dropping their second straight CCAA game. Stanislaus State is now 5-7 overall and 4-3 in CCAA while Cal Poly Pomona improves to 13-1 overall and 6-1 in league play. Pomona remains undefeated at home at 6-0 this season.

Stanislaus jumped out to a 13-4 lead early as the Broncos were just 1 of 12 from the field early. But the Warriors went on a dry spill as well, at one point missing eight straight shots, to allow the home team to rally back.

Stan State took a 25-22 lead into the break with Alek Carlson scoring 12 of his 15 points in the first half on four three-pointers. Carlson, however, was held to three points in the second half. Pomona started the second half with seven straight points to take control. The Broncos also had runs of 7-2 and 9-2 to pull ahead.

In the end the Warriors shot 26 percent on the night, 13 for 50, and was just 8 of 28 from the arc. Cal Poly Pomona leads the CCAA with a 60.1 points allowed average. The Broncos are also second best in opponents shooting at .401.

Christian Bayne had the second most points total for Stan State with 11 points. He also had seven rebounds and six assists. Richard Medina was next in scoring with five points with six rebounds.

Cal Poly Pomona, which has won 14 of the last 15 games in this head-to-head series, was led by Barry Bell with 18 points and eight rebounds. Jordan Faison, who averages 17.9 points per game, had just four points.

The Warriors will now travel all the way up North to Arcata to take on Humboldt State (11-2, 5-2 CCAA). HSU lost for the first time at home Thursday night against Chico State (86-68) and is 9-1 this season at Lumberjack Arena.
