SEASIDE — It was another positive day for the Stanislaus State women's soccer team as the Warriors defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 2-0 on Thursday to keep their CCAA tournament hopes alive.
With a win at San Francisco State on Saturday, the Warriors could qualify for the conference tournament as the No. 5 seed. That's because Cal State L.A. tied against Humboldt State (1-1) and San Francisco State lost to Cal State East Bay (2-1 in OT) on Thursday. Cal State L.A. would also have to do no better than a tie at Sonoma State on Saturday for Stanislaus State to finish with 18 points (with a win at SF State).
After Thursday's win over Cal State Monterey Bay, the Warriors improved to 11-6 overall and 5-6 in the CCAA — good for seventh place in the standings. With Cal State San Marcos ineligble for postseason play, the Warriors currently hold the sixth and final spot in the CCAA tournament. Cal State L.A. (16 points), Stan State (15) and San Francisco State (14) will fight for the final two berths on Saturday.
CCAA Standings
"Monterey Bay is always a tough place to play. I was very proud of our effort today," head coach
Gabriel Bolton said. "We were aggressive int he attack and very solid defensively."
Freshman
Mariah McDuffy got the Warriors on the board first in the 17th minute with her first collegiate goal. She stole the ball and took a dribble before firing from 35 yards out to the top of the goal to make it 1-0.
In the 58th minute,
Jade Poon and
Kirsten Coleman connected for another goal to make it 2-0. Poon passed into the center box for Coleman who spun and shot into the net.
"Mariah was the player of the match for me. Not only did she scored but she absolutely dominated the midfield," Bolton added.
The Warriors out-shot the Otters (5-11, 1-10 CCAA) 17-11 with nine shots on goal. They forced CSUMB goalkeeper Christen Silkey to have to pick up seven saves.
Haley Crook had six saves to lead the Warriors as Stan State recorded its seventh shutout this season.
Stanislaus State, 4-1 in the last five games, travels to San Francisco State — where the Warriors have not been defeated since 2000 — on Saturday to play for a chance to play in the CCAA tournament. A tie against the Gators would guarantee the Warriors a spot in the postseason event. Since the start of 2001 season, the Warriors are 17-0-5 against SF State.
If qualified, the Warriors would travel to face either Cal State San Bernardino or Cal Poly Pomona in the first round match on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
