Warriors blank SF State, qualify for CCAA Tournament

SAN FRANCISCO — The Warriors wrapped up the "Second Season" on a roll as they defeated San Francisco State, 1-0, Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale at Cox Stadium. In the process, Stanislaus State qualifies for the CCAA Tournament to extend its year.

Gabriela Vargas broke the stalemate in the 88th minute to lift the Warriors as they closed out the CCAA season 12-6 overall and 6-6 in league play. With 18 points in the standings, the Warriors will qualify for the postseason event as the No. 5 seed. Stan State heads to Pomona to take on Cal Poly Pomona on Tuesday for a first-round match. Game time is at 4:30 p.m.

"When you think of where we were and where we are now I just couldn't be more proud of the women on this team," head coach Gabriel Bolton said. "We certainly didn't mean to start the CCAA season 1-5 but this is our story and we are very happy that (the season is) not over."

The Warriors started the CCAA season 1-5, but set the goal to used the second half of the schedule as a "Second Season." They went 5-1 during the final stretch, losing only to UC San Diego, to make it into the tournament.

Saturday's win — coupled with Cal State L.A. loss at Sonoma State — moved the Warriors up to sixth in the standings. Cal State San Marcos, which also ended up with 18 points, is ineligible for the postseason which meant Stan State is the No. 5 seed. Cal State L.A. is the sixth seed and will face Cal State San Bernardino.

The two winners on Tuesday will converge with UC San Diego, the regular season champion, and Sonoma State next Friday for the semifinals at Warrior Stadium. The CCAA Tournament championship match is Sunday, Nov. 6 at 3 p.m.

Stanislaus State continued its dominance over the SF State Gators (8-7-3, 4-6-2 CCAA), extending its unbeaten run to 18-0-5 since 2000.

Vargas' goal was on a breakaway as she split two defenders 40 yards away from goal. She dribbled and beat the keeper to slipped it in for the late 1-0 lead.

During the final 15 minutes of the match the Warriors dominated on offense and could have broken the match open with more chances, including some penalty kick opportunities that weren't awarded.

Starting goalkeeper Haley Crook had to come out of the match with about 29 minutes left to play after colliding with a player, but Morgan Cruce stepped up to the challenge and kept the Gators scoreless.

"Morgan was absolutely fantastic. She stepped in and took control of the match," Bolton added.

Stanislaus State is in the CCAA tournament for the sixth time since 2010. The Warriors won the tournament title in 2011 and 2013.
