POMONA — The one-goal losses continued for Stanislaus State men's soccer as the Warriors lost to a strong Cal Poly Pomona team, 2-1, in overtime Friday night.
Cal Poly Pomona, which was the national runner-up last season, was fortunate to improve to 9-3-1 on the season and 5-2-0 in the CCAA with a penalty kick goal in the 94th minute to end the match.
The Warriors, however, played well enough to pull off an upset over the fifth ranked team in the West Region before dipping their records to 1-6-3 overall and 0-5-0 in league play.
Stanislaus State has now lost five one-goal matches this season with four of those against conference opponents. The Warriors have also been in five overtime matches this season with a 0-2-3 record.
On Friday night,
Joseph Mayorca scored his first collegiate goal as a Warrior in the 60th minute to even the score. That goal answered a Pomona score 10 minutes earlier by Andres Cakar.
But, three minutes into extra time, the Broncos were awarded a penalty kick, with a handball call, as Luis Najera converted the try to end the contest.
Stan State will have to rebound on Sunday in hopes of its first CCAA win at Cal State San Bernardino.
