Stan State in win-column with victory over Art U

TURLOCK — The Stanislaus State women's basketball team own the fourth quarter as the Warriors out-lasted Academy of Art in a 67-61 win in their home opener Wednesday night inside Fitzpatrick Arena.

Three Warriors were in double figures in points and Riley Holladay had a solid game as Stanislaus State makes a mark in the win-column to improve to 1-2 overall.

Stan State snapped a two-game losing streak to Academy of Art and improved to 7-2 against PacWest teams since the start of the 2013-14 season. The Warriors will face another PacWest team on Friday when they host Notre Dame de Namur at 5:30 p.m.

Ana Burch led the Warriors with 15 points, followed by Reana Hardin's 14. Erika Larsen netted 10 points while Holladay posted eight points. Holladay also had game bests 11 rebounds and seven assists with two steals. Burch also had four steals. 

The Warriors used a 7-0 run early in the fourth quarter to turn a 3-point deficit into a four-point lead to regain momentum for the final push. After Jazzlyn Brewster gave Art U another lead at 56-55 with a three-point play at 6:00 to play, a three-pointer by Angelica Baylon, followed by a Holladay layup gave the Warriors the final lead change.

Stanislaus made five free throws in the final four minutes, with a Hardin jumper at 1:50, to hang-on for the victory.

Stan State out-scored Academy of Art 21-12 in the final period.

The Warriors had opened the game with a 9-0 run before the game became an even-battle. The Urban Knights (0-3) had a 13-2 run to take a 20-16 lead early in the second quarter.

Rodericka Ware led Art U with 19 points on 8 of 19 shooting. She also had five assists, two blocked shots and two steals. Helena Orts scored 16 points for the Knights as well.
